Acceptable Technology Use Policy for Students and Parents
There are many great educational sites that empower student learning, but there are equally as many unsafe sites out there that are not appropriate for students. One of the best ways to keep students safe is to teach them about how they can be responsible while surfing the internet. It is recommended that schools and libraries develop an appropriate use policy in the form of a contract. Students must understand that when they sign the contract that they are agreeing to the terms of the Acceptable Use Policy.
Necessary Components of an Acceptable Use Policy

- A code of conduct for acceptable use on the internet
- Consequences for not adhering to the AUP

- A statement that disclaims meeting state and national laws and regulations in regards to telecommunications
- A statement regarding the need to abide by Fair Use Laws and copyright regulations
- A statement discussing safety
- Signature block for students, parents, and teachers
- A disclaimer dissolving the school from responsibility under specific circumstances

- Did you use clear easy to understand language?
- Does it use positive language or list does and don'ts?
